So you need to be able to calculate how much traffic you will expect to see and work from there.
How do you do that? You guessed, we can work it out using an Excel Spreadsheet!

As you can see there is a space for you to enter your search term and a big “Calculate Traffic” button.
Unfortunately due to the traffic estimation tool utilizing a capcha image we could not scrape
the monthly estimated traffic so you will need to type that in until we can find an alternative source for that data.

When you hit the button the spreadsheet will go away and get the search results then calculate what share of the traffic each link is likely to receive. I estimated the traffic by multiplying the monthly traffic with the percent of traffic each serp gets. Those estimates came from this article.

The article is a little old, but the data is still valid according to what I see in my webmaster central account for our domain.

The Excel Link Checker

If you would like to get our Excel Link Checking spreadsheet, go here and download it. When you run it, make sure you enable macros.

Enter your website URL without the “http://” in cell B2 then enter the URLs of any pages on the web that should be linking to your website in cells A5, A6, and so on.

When you are ready to check the links, hit Ctrl-Shift-B. All the links that are supposed to exist will be checked, and if the link is found it will discover the target page and if it is do-follow!

How it Works

Essentially what the macro does is it retrieves the contents of each of the pages, and scans for links to your website.

Only the first link to your website in each page is considered. If a link appears then its anchor text and target etc are displayed next to the page’s URL. If a back-link is not found, a note to that effect is shown.

The information can be updated only once a day (configurable in the code), so you don’t end up hammering the websites that link to you.

The main macro, CheckBacklinks, simply creates a BacklinkChecker object for each URL that needs updating, and then waits for all objects to finish.

The juicy stuff is all inside the BacklinkChecker class.

Just like with the previous tool, the search result ranking tracker, we use WinHTTP to fetch the contents of pages while masquerading with an Internet Explorer 7 User-Agent string.

Unlike the previous tool, however, the code here uses asynchronous I/O mode. In this mode the VBA code gets an event notification as soon as the page has finished downloading. This allows us to retrieve many pages in parallel, and is a very good thing because we assume that very few URLs in the list will reside on the same physical server.

Also unlike the previous tool, the HTML parsing is done using MSHTML library. By utilizing the HTMLDocument object, we get full access to the page’s DOM. Just like had the page been opened in Internet Explorer.

With the DOM in place, the code iterates over the links in the document, looking for our precious backlinks.

Summary

Bovenaan Google werd in de maand Oktober ongeveer 1300 keer opgezocht door internet gebruikers. De concurrentie van dit zoekwoord is gemiddeld. Hoe hoger de concurrentie van een bepaald zoekwoord, des te lastiger het is om bovenaan Google te komen. Nu zal ik het artikel niet vol spammen met dit zoekwoord, want dit zal mijn artikel alleen maar benadelen op lange termijn in de zoekresultaten.  Als men een artikel schrijft met als doel om een  zoekwoord hoog in de zoekresultaten te krijgen, zal er met verschillende factoren rekening gehouden moeten worden. Een van deze factoren is relevantie. Als een website of artikel wordt beoordeeld door de “Google Spiders” kunnen deze geautomatiseerde botjes een link leggen met het zoekwoord en de tekst die eromheen staat.  Belangrijk is om niet af te dwalen van het onderwerp. Zorg dat aan het einde van je geschreven tekst, de tags worden toegevoegd. Met tags laat je aan Google of andere zoekmachines zien waar de tekst over gaat. Zo kunnen gebruikers makkelijker jou artikel vinden via de zoekmachines. De meeste tags kunnen standaard in een CMS systeem worden bijgevoegd

Ik zal het zoekwoord ” bovenaan Google “ volgen met Ranktracker. Deze tool zal aangeven op welke positie mijn zoekwoord zich bevindt in de zoekmachines. Nu zal het een week of twee duren voordat dit artikel wordt geïndexeerd door de zoekmachines. Ik zal jullie op de hoogte over de voortgang van het experiment.

**UPDATE**
Na ongeveer 3 uur heeft Google mijn post geïndexeerd, en het zoekwoord op plek 25 weten te zetten. Dit zal voorlopig nog schommelen. Nu afwachten op welke positie hij stabiel zal staan.

Er is ook een plug-in voor Firefox beschikbaar, hier te downloaden. Deze plug-in gaat in combinatie met Firebug. Met de plug-in kan er direct worden gezien waar de website moeite mee heeft, en zal ook direct aangeven waar het probleem ligt.

De laadtijd zal dus een belangrijke rol gaan spelen in het optimalisatietraject van websites.

Alle Websites worden aangeven met een bepaald rangsysteem die Google een tijd geleden heeft geïntroduceerd, genaamd Pagerank. Pagerank is een manier om webpagina’s te rangschikken naar mate van relevantie (Wikipedia). Bij de Google toolbar zit deze Pagerank indicator geïntegreerd en kan je dus makkelijk zien of de website veel of weinig Pagerank bevat. Om de pagerank te laten stijgen is het nodig om waardevolle links te verzamelen naar je website. De ranking gaat overigens op een schaal van 1 tot 10. Pagerank 10 is het maximale en dus ook het beste wat er gehaald kan worden. Enkele websites hebben deze status weten te krijgen zoals Google.com en www.w3.org.  Google update deze ranks regelmatig.

Nu is het linkbuilden maar een deel van het optimalisatie proces. Voordat je aan linkbuilden begint, zorg eerst dat je website voldoet aan de richtlijnen van Google. In mijn volgende post zal ik beginnen bij de start van het optimalisatie traject waarbij ook de richtlijnen worden beschreven die Google speciaal voor de webmasters heeft uitgebracht.

Update: Nog net voor het oude jaar heeft Google een update gedaan met de pagerankings. Deze website is van nul naar pagerank 3 gegaan!

Sitemap aanmaken

Dit is niet alleen goed voor de optimalisatie voor je website, maar ook handig voor de gebruiker. Zo kan er makkelijk door de website worden genavigeerd. Nu kan je twee soorten sitemaps maken. Een fysieke sitemap die te zien is op de website, en een XML sitemap. Beiden zijn nodig om je website goed te laten indexeren door Google.

De eerste stap is de sitemap, deze kan je zelf  maken door alle pagina links geordend onder elkaar te zetten. Daarnaast  kan er een XML sitemap worden toegevoegd. Klinkt ingewikkeld, maar gelukkig zijn er tools voor die een XML sitemap makkelijk en snel voor je kunnen genereren. De XML sitemap moet worden verzonden naar Google zelf. Ik zelf gebruik Webmaster Tools van Google. Tevens is deze tool ook handig om je inkomende links en zoekwoorden te monitoren. Om deze tool te gebruiken zal je eerst even een Google account moeten aanmaken. (Werkt met Gmail accounts)

Waar kan ik een XML sitemap aanmaken?

Op deze site vul je de URL van je website in, dan wordt er een XML bestand aangemaakt. Vergeet niet de Frequency op weekly te zetten en de priority op automatisch. Je kan nu het XML bestand downloaden en uploaden naar je FTP. Zorg ervoor dat het XML bestand gewoon in de root komt te staan. In de Webmaster Tools van Google, kan je nu de XML sitemap verzenden door simpelweg te linken naar het XML bestand.
